Breakfast: Turkish Eggs

You might have heard me harp on about breakfasts before, and how I have only recently become acquainted with them. But now it has become a weekend pastime of mine to head up to the shops or the market to collect some delicious food for a decadent weekend brekkie.

On this morning I felt like recreating the delicious Turkish Eggs I always order at Queenies; my local cafe. So I went and collected:

  • Greek yogurt
  • A fresh loaf of bread (I used sourdough, but you can use anything really - try Turkish pide!)
  • Fresh free-range eggs
  • Avocado
  • Lemon
  • Chilli powder

Already it sounds like a strange combination - eggs and yoghurt? I hear you. But trust me, the sharp yoghurt and lemon cut through the rich egg and avocado, leaving you with a glorious mess to dunk your toast into.

The recipe is simple: add a generous dollop of yoghurt to your serving bowl and top with two poached eggs (hint: check out my blog post on poaching eggs). Place a few slices of avocado in the bowl,a squeeze of lemon juice and a generous sprinkle of chilli powder and sea salt on top. Last of all, toast slices of bread until golden, lather with butter and dunk into your eggs.

If you're ready to break the mould of bacon and fried eggs on the weekend then give this recipe a go. It's certainly not your usual eggs on toast but it's one of my favourites, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it too.

P.S. Keep an eye out for my next blog post for the perfect weekday breakfast!

Little and Friday: After Hours

I've been a slack blogger these last few weeks- but I'm back in the game, and surprisingly this post in completely un-burger related (shocking, I know).

You might remember my post on Little and Friday, the amazing bakery in Belmont on the North Shore. But on this occasion I arrived well after the last doughnut had been devoured, and the shop next door called After Hours was opening it's doors.

After Hours is the dinner edition of Little and Friday. They serve up a selection of delicious salads, hot meals and desserts from Wednesday to Sunday 2pm-9pm.

When I visited it was sticky free range five spiced pork belly, atop a selection of salads. The pork belly was fragrant and melt in your mouth - I could have eaten the whole tray.

After Hours is the perfect lazy dinner option, when you want quality home-style food without the incumbent supermarket trip and pile of dishes. The menu changes daily so keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates.

Lastly, don't forget to take a slice of cake or sweet pie home (it is a Little and Friday establishment after all!).

Enjoy!

Better Burger

OK I promise this is the last burger post I will write for a while...but how could I resist blogging the coolest new burger bar in town? Especially seeing as it is my favourite so far.

Better Burger is a new burger joint sandwiched in between Britomart Country Club and 1885. It is open through from lunch to the wee hours of the morning, and I'm certain that many of the people in the 1885 line will have to throw in the towel and succumb their night to the delicious wafting smell of burgers.

We (especially Alice) were pretty excited to order, and all unashamedly chose the double cheeseburger - in my opinion the only thing that should be ordered off this menu.

Of course accompanied by fries and shakes.

The burgers were cooked to medium rare perfection, and were laden with pickles and cheese- just the way they should be.

We were on a quick lunch break, so gobbled up the burgers as quickly as we could and rushed back to work- with just enough time for Alice and I to have a quick photo outside.

Jamie decided she wanted to be in the photo too... and without much choice we relented.

The vast choice of burger bars is daunting at the moment to say the least. But if you haven't already, head down to Britomart- maybe even do a double header at Pinky's and Better Burger and let me know your favourite!
